2ND ANNUAL ALUMNI GAME SCORES 1045 LBS
OF FOOD FOR COMMUNITY
LAKEHEAD EXPRESS SOCCER CLUB DONATES FOOD
AND ANNOUNCES OTF GRANT
December 23, 2010
(Thunder
Bay) - The Lakehead Express Soccer Club (LEX) hosted its 2nd Annual
Lakehead Express Alumni Game, in support of the Thunder Bay Regional
Food Distribution Association (RFDA) at the Sports Dome. The Honourable
Bill Mauro, MPP Thunder Bay-Atikokan, was on hand to present a plaque
commemorating a $15,000 grant received by LEX from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation (OTF). Joining MPP Mauro was OTF representative Jason Hughes,
to officially congratulate LEX as they presented 730 pounds of food to
RFDA.
"I am pleased to be here today to
congratulate Lakehead Express Soccer Club for their continued commitment
to supporting active lifestyles through soccer for youth in our
community,” said MPP Mauro. “Additionally, the support they have shown
through their alumni game for the Regional Food Distribution Association
is a wonderful gift to the community and those in need."
The OTF grant will be used over the
next year towards the purchase of equipment and furnishings for the
office of LEX. The volunteer-led organization continues to support
community initiatives and nurture a love of soccer with local youth. New
training equipment will help LEX ensure players have access to improve
performance and development of skills.
The RFDA fundraising initiative was a
success in 2009, and has garnered more support of team members this
year. The donation of non-perishable food items was raised by the club’s
competitive youth rep teams, and more was collected through admissions
to the game. Volker Kromm, Executive Director of the RFDA, was on hand
to accept the food and was delighted by the clubs contribution. “It is
great to see that youth are stepping forward and realizing the
significance of these types of donations,” said Kromm. “As a community
we need to continue to harness this type of positive energy. With the
entire club getting behind this drive, it multiplies the effect the
donation will have on the people in need.”
The City of Thunder Bay was
represented by Councillor At Large, Aldo Ruberto, who believes
organizations like LEX have an important role to play in supporting our
community. “Here is another example of a sports club that is not just
providing opportunities for its players to go onto higher levels of
competition or education, but is engraining in our youth the importance
of giving back to the community,” stated Ruberto.
A leading grantmaker in Canada, the
Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary
sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of
the Government of Ontario, OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities.

She continued in the
Regional Player Development Program and made the U16 provincial team
which won gold at the U16 National Championship.
At this point, Olivia was
selected into the NTC program and she decided to move to Toronto
full-time in order to pursue her goal of representing Canada one day.
“Olivia is a great
example of how the OSA’s Regional Program can embrace and help to grow
the potential of a talented player regardless of their geographical
location,” says Bryan Rosenfeld, Director of Player Development, NTCO
U17 Women's Coach and himself a product of the Thunder Bay talent pool.
“As the player moves
higher up the competition ladder, self-sacrifice in terms of time away
from family and friends in order to participate in Provincial training
throughout the year becomes part of the equation, including long-term
relocation.
“The best players must
train and play with the best players all the time, so relocation at the
age of 16 is mandatory for any player who aspires to the highest level.
“For the boys, this may
mean travelling to Europe or to our National Training Centre in Vaughan,
Ontario. This was the path chosen by Olivia and we have seen a massive
improvement in every aspect of her game since relocation.
“She is a very talented
player and her ability reflects the quality coaching she received at the
Club and Regional level at an early age.
“Talent is not enough,
however -- Olivia has great drive, discipline and passion for the game.
She is hungry -- perhaps hungrier than many other players -- and that
quality gives her an edge in the pursuit of her goal to represent Canada
in 4 years at the U-20 level and to attain a full scholarship at a
quality University or College in the US.
“Olivia has made this
happen with great support from her parents and community who can be
proud of her accomplishments to date. If she continues at the rate she
is going, I foresee a bright future for Olivia in Canadian Women's
Soccer.”

LEX HANG TOUGH AT SPRING CUP
April 26, 2010
The Lakehead Express Soccer
Club (LEX) would like to congratulate the U15 Girls Rep Team for their hard
work and effort at the NSC Spring Cup this past weekend at the National
Soccer Centre in Blaine, Minnesota.
In the second annual NSC
Spring Cup the U15 Girls finished the weekend with a record of two ties and
one loss, narrowly missing out on the knockout stages of tournament.
Tournament play began on Saturday, April 24th, with LEX taking on the Kelix
Intra. LEX dominated much of the possession but were unable able to put the
ball in the back of the net, and it resulted in a 0-0 final. Saturday's
second game saw the LEX suffer same fate, unable to convert numerous chances
on goal, tying DASC Corazon 1-1. Scoring for LEX in the draw was forward
Alyssa Johnston.
Heading into Sunday's game
against the Minnesota Thunder Academy, LEX needed a win to advance in the
tournament. After taking a 1-0 lead into the first half, courtesy of a Renee
Clarke strike, LEX struggled to hold onto their lead against a very talented
Thunder squad. An early Thunder goal left LEX playing on their heels, and
the Thunder were able to capitalize on their chances scoring four goals in
the second half handing LEX a 4-1 loss, knocking them out of the tournament.
Amanda Tavares was named the team's most valuable player, for her on the
field contributions and playing through injury.
The Lakehead Express U15
Girls will use this tournament as a tune-up, as they prepare for the
inaugural season of the Elite Women’s Soccer League (EWSL). The EWSL will
begin in May 2010 and will see the best women's and elite female youth
team’s in Thunder Bay compete. |
